The word nature comes from the Latin term natura, or "essential characteristics, innate disposition", and in historic times, literally intended "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek term physis (φύσις), which at first related to the intrinsic characteristics that vegetation, family pets, and other features of the earth develop of their own accord. The concept of nature all together, the physical world, is one of the expansions of the initial notion; it commenced with certain key applications of the term φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has continuously gained currency since. This usage extended during the development of modern scientific method in the last several centuries.

Within the many uses of the term today, "nature" often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general realm of living vegetation and pets or animals, and sometimes to the functions associated with inanimate objects-the way that particular types of things can be found and change of their own accord, including the weather and geology of the Earth. It is often taken to signify the "natural environment" or wilderness-wild animals, stones, forest, and in general those things that contain not been significantly altered by human treatment, or which persist despite individual intervention. For example, manufactured objects and human relationship generally aren't considered part of nature, unless experienced as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can still be found today signifies a distinction between your natural and the artificial, with the unnatural being known as whatever has been helped bring into being by the human awareness or a human mind. Depending on the particular context, the word "natural" might also be recognized from the unnatural or the supernatural.
