The word nature comes from the Latin expression natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in ancient times, literally intended "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek expression physis (φύσις), which at first related to the intrinsic characteristics that plants, animals, and other features of the planet develop of their own accord. The idea of nature as a whole, the physical world, is one of several expansions of the initial notion; it began with certain primary applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has continuously gained currency since. This usage persisted during the arrival of modern scientific method within the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the term today, "nature" often identifies geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general realm of living crops and pets or animals, and occasionally to the operations associated with inanimate objects-the way that one types of things can be found and change of their own accord, including the weather and geology of the planet earth. With regards to the particular context, the word "natural" may also be recognized from the unnatural or the supernatural.
