The word nature comes from the Latin expression natura, or "essential characteristics, innate disposition", and in historic times, literally designed "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek expression physis (φύσις), which at first related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, pets or animals, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The idea of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of the expansions of the original notion; it commenced with certain primary applications of the term φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has progressively gained currency since. This usage continuing during the introduction of modern clinical method within the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the term today, "nature" often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general world of living plants and pets or animals, and in some instances to the operations associated with inanimate objects-the way that one types of things can be found and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the planet earth. It is often taken to signify the "environment" or wilderness-wild pets, stones, forest, and generally speaking those things which have not been considerably altered by human intervention, or which persist despite human being intervention. For instance, manufactured objects and human connection generally are not considered part of nature, unless experienced as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can be found today implies a distinction between the natural and the man-made, with the manufactured being realized as that which has been brought into being with a human awareness or a individual mind. Depending on the particular context, the word "natural" may also be distinguished from the unnatural or the supernatural.
