The word nature comes from the Latin expression natura, or "essential features, innate disposition", and in old times, literally recommended "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek phrase physis (φύσις), which actually related to the intrinsic characteristics that crops, pets, and other top features of the earth develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of the expansions of the original notion; it commenced with certain center applications of the term φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has progressively gained currency since. This usage persisted during the advancement of modern technological method within the last several centuries.

Within the many uses of the term today, "nature" often identifies geology and animals. Nature can refer to the general realm of living vegetation and animals, and in some instances to the operations associated with inanimate objects-the way that particular types of things exist and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the planet earth. It is often taken to signify the "natural environment" or wilderness-wild family pets, rocks, forest, and in general those things that have not been considerably altered by individual involvement, or which persist despite human being intervention. For example, manufactured items and human discussion generally aren't considered part of nature, unless licensed as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can be found today suggests a distinction between the natural and the manufactured, with the artificial being known as whatever has been brought into being by the human consciousness or a human mind. With regards to the particular context, the word "natural" might also be distinguished from the unnatural or the supernatural.
