The word nature is derived from the Latin term natura, or "essential features, innate disposition", and in historic times, literally meant "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek term physis (φύσις), which formerly related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, pets, and other features of the planet develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of several expansions of the initial notion; it began with certain core applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has continuously gained currency ever since. This usage prolonged during the advancement of modern technological method in the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the word today, "nature" often identifies geology and wildlife. Nature can make reference to the general world of living plants and pets, and in some cases to the procedures associated with inanimate objects-the way that particular types of things are present and change of their own accord, like the weather and geology of the planet earth. It is often taken to indicate the "environment" or wilderness-wild pets or animals, stones, forest, and generally speaking those things that have not been greatly altered by individual involvement, or which persist despite human intervention.
