The word nature comes from the Latin word natura, or "essential features, innate disposition", and in early times, literally meant "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek expression physis (φύσις), which actually related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, family pets, and other top features of the earth develop of their own accord. The concept of nature all together, the physical world, is one of several expansions of the original notion; it started out with certain central applications of the term φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has steadily gained currency since. This usage extended during the development of modern medical method within the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the term today, "nature" often refers to geology and animals. Nature can refer to the general world of living plant life and family pets, and sometimes to the functions associated with inanimate objects-the way that particular types of things are present and change of their own accord, like the weather and geology of the Earth. It is taken to mean the "environment" or wilderness-wild family pets, rocks, forest, and generally speaking those things which have not been considerably altered by human intervention, or which persist despite real human intervention. For example, manufactured objects and human connections generally aren't considered part of nature, unless trained as, for example, "human nature" or "the complete of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can be found today means a distinction between your natural and the unnatural, with the artificial being understood as whatever has been brought into being by a human awareness or a real human mind. Depending on the particular context, the word "natural" might also be distinguished from the unnatural or the supernatural.
