The word nature is derived from the Latin expression natura, or "essential attributes, innate disposition", and in old times, literally meant "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek phrase physis (φύσις), which formerly related to the intrinsic characteristics that vegetation, pets or animals, and other top features of the world develop of their own accord. The concept of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of the expansions of the original notion; it commenced with certain core applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has gradually gained currency since. This usage prolonged during the introduction of modern technological method within the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the term today, "nature" often identifies geology and animals. Nature can refer to the general realm of living plants and pets or animals, and sometimes to the functions associated with inanimate objects-the way that one types of things are present and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the Earth. It is taken to imply the "natural environment" or wilderness-wild pets or animals, stones, forest, and generally speaking those things that contain not been substantially altered by human being involvement, or which persist despite human intervention. For example, manufactured things and human interaction generally aren't considered part of nature, unless licensed as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional idea of natural things which can still be found today indicates a distinction between the natural and the manufactured, with the manufactured being realized as whatever has been brought into being by the human consciousness or a human being mind. Depending on the particular context, the term "natural" may also be recognized from the unnatural or the supernatural.
