The word nature is derived from the Latin word natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in historical times, literally meant "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek phrase physis (φύσις), which at first related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, family pets, and other top features of the world develop of their own accord. The idea of nature all together, the physical universe, is one of the expansions of the original notion; it started out with certain main applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has continuously gained currency since. This usage continued during the advent of modern medical method within the last several centuries.

Within the many uses of the term today, "nature" often refers to geology and animals.
