The word nature comes from the Latin expression natura, or "essential qualities, innate disposition", and in historical times, literally recommended "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek phrase physis (φύσις), which at first related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, pets, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The idea of nature as a whole, the physical universe, is one of the expansions of the initial notion; it began with certain key applications of the term φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has steadily gained currency ever since. This usage continued during the advancement of modern medical method within the last several centuries.

Within the various uses of the word today, "nature" often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general world of living plant life and pets or animals, and in some cases to the techniques associated with inanimate objects-the way that particular types of things exist and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the Earth. It is often taken to mean the "environment" or wilderness-wild pets or animals, rocks, forest, and generally those things which may have not been considerably altered by human being involvement, or which persist despite individuals intervention. For instance, manufactured items and human conversation generally are not considered part of nature, unless certified as, for example, "human nature" or "the whole of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can still be found today indicates a distinction between the natural and the unnatural, with the man-made being recognized as whatever has been helped bring into being with a human awareness or a human mind. With regards to the particular context, the term "natural" might also be distinguished from the unnatural or the supernatural.
