The word nature comes from the Latin word natura, or "essential characteristics, innate disposition", and in old times, literally recommended "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek term physis (φύσις), which formerly related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, family pets, and other top features of the planet develop of their own accord. The idea of nature as a whole, the physical world, is one of several expansions of the original notion; it started with certain key applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has gradually gained currency since. This usage sustained during the introduction of modern methodical method in the last several centuries.

Within the many uses of the word today, "nature" often identifies geology and animals. Nature can refer to the general realm of living vegetation and animals, and in some instances to the procedures associated with inanimate objects-the way that one types of things can be found and change of their own accord, like the weather and geology of the planet earth. It is often taken to indicate the "natural environment" or wilderness-wild animals, rocks, forest, and generally those things that have not been significantly altered by real human intervention, or which persist despite individual intervention. For instance, manufactured things and human interaction generally aren't considered part of nature, unless certified as, for example, "human nature" or "the complete of nature". This more traditional concept of natural things which can still be found today implies a distinction between the natural and the manufactured, with the artificial being recognized as that which has been brought into being by the human awareness or a individual mind. With regards to the particular context, the word "natural" may also be recognized from the unnatural or the supernatural.
