The word nature comes from the Latin phrase natura, or "essential features, innate disposition", and in historical times, literally designed "birth". Natura is a Latin translation of the Greek expression physis (φύσις), which formerly related to the intrinsic characteristics that plant life, family pets, and other features of the world develop of their own accord. The concept of nature all together, the physical world, is one of the expansions of the original notion; it started out with certain main applications of the word φύσις by pre-Socratic philosophers, and has progressively gained currency ever since. This usage continuing during the advent of modern scientific method within the last several centuries.

Within the many uses of the term today, "nature" often identifies geology and wildlife. Nature can make reference to the general realm of living crops and family pets, and in some instances to the procedures associated with inanimate objects-the way that one types of things are present and change of their own accord, including the weather and geology of the Earth. It is taken to suggest the "natural environment" or wilderness-wild family pets, stones, forest, and on the whole those things which have not been significantly altered by individual treatment, or which persist despite human intervention.
